Leadership
"So the point is not to become a leader. The point is to become yourself, to use yourself completely - all your skills, gifts, and energies - in order to make your vision manifest. You must withhold nothing. You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be, and to enjoy the process of becoming." -Warren Bennis
We believe every student has leadership potential and challenge you to learn more about your own leadership style and practice. We believe that leadership development is a vital part of a student's University experience and overall educational process. The University experience is your learning laboratory to explore, practice and develop your leadership potential. The Staff in the Student Involvement & Leadership Center are committed to helping you identify and develop your own leadership path. We can help you get connected to a leadership development program where you can learn more about leadership. We offer support to student leaders as they take on leadership roles. We can connect you with leadership opportunities on the campus. And yes, you can even minor in leadership at Boise State University. We know that taking advantage of these opportunities will provide you with experiences and skills that will broaden your educational experiences and assist you while at Boise State University and in life beyond the University.
At this time, the Student Involvement & Leadership Center plans and presents three signature leadership development programs every year:
An annual tradition, the Student Leadership Summit is designed to bring together student leaders from across the campus for an opportunity network, develop their leadership skills and prepare the next year.ᅠ This year's Student Leadership Summit is scheduled for August 14 - 16, 2009 and will be held in McCall, Idaho. Participation is by invitation only and students are selected based on leadership roles held on campus.
Leadership Quest is our oldest signature program and is designed for emerging leaders. It is a one day conference held on campus in February or March. This free program features an opportunity for the participants to network with one another, attend a number of leadership development sessions, and to discuss the topic of leadership.ᅠ A highlight of the March 2009 Leadership Quest was the keynote speaker, Dr. Vincent Kituku, who shared his own insights and thoughts about leadership with the participants. Recruitment for the 2010 Leadership Quest will begin in late fall 2009. Our newest signature program is the Women in Leadership Conference. First offered in March 2009, this program was designed to bring together female students to discuss and further develop their own understanding of leadership and its practice. The program offers a series of leadership development sessions focused on the role and practice of leadership from a woman's perspective, opportunities to meet fellow student leaders and to engage in dialogue about their own experiences in leadership. The 2009 program also included a panel of prominent women leaders from our campus and community who shared their own leadership experiences and answered questions from the students. The 2009 panel included Nicole LeFavour (Senator, State of Idaho), Dr. Cheryl Schrader (Dean of the Boise State University College of Engineering), Cathy Silak (Former Vice Chief Justice, Idaho Supreme Court & Dean, Concordia University School of Law), and Keziah Sullivan (Community Outreach Specialist, International Rescue Committee). If you would like an email update about this program when recruitment begins, please click here to submit your name and email address.
As the Student Involvement & Leadership Center enters a new phase of its existence, we are exploring new ideas for leadership programs and anticipate expanding the leadership development offerings over the next few years. And if you really want to connect leadership to your curricular experience, you can minor in leadership.
